Greener Buildings. Sustainable Performance.

As demand for sustainable, high-performing buildings continues to grow, commissioning professionals are essential to ensuring building systems deliver optimal performance, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and environmental benefits.

The Commissioning Fundamentals microcredential provides a practical introduction to the commissioning process and the sustainability practices that support greener buildings. Delivered online over six weeks, this 30-hour program combines flexible, self-paced learning with facilitator support and a competency-based approach focused on practical application. Through project-based assessments, learners develop the skills to support commissioning projects, engage stakeholders, manage risks, and integrate recognized sustainability frameworks into commissioning activities. No exams are required, allowing learners to demonstrate their knowledge through real-world project work.

This microcredential builds a strong foundation for future specialization in green building commissioning and sustainable building performance.

What You'll Learn

  • Building commissioning purpose, principles, and value
  • Stakeholder roles and responsibilities throughout the commissioning process
  • Commissioning process plans and kickoff documentation
  • Sustainability frameworks and rating systems, including LEED, WELL, and Passive House
  • Project risk assessment and mitigation strategies
  • Stakeholder accountability tools, including RACI matrices
  • Building performance outcomes for energy, water, waste, and indoor air quality

Certification

When you successfully complete the Commissioning Fundamentals microcredential, you’ll earn a digital badge – a shareable, visual credential that highlights your new skills. Add it to your résumé, LinkedIn profile, or email signature to show employers or clients exactly what you know and can do in the green building industry.

This microcredential is the first in a series of Green Building Commissioning microcredentials. Take all microcredentials in the series and earn a milestone badge in Green Building Commissioning. 

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum completion of grade 11 or higher with related work/educational experience 

Recommended Assets:

  • Familiarity with building construction
  • Experience with drawing and technical document interpretation
  • Green Building and Retrofitting Foundations microcredential

Note: Learners without previous experience can expect to further develop their knowledge through independent learning that builds confidence in reading drawings, technical documentation, and industry terminology.
